Crown Melbourne to undergo US$141.5m revamp

The redevelopment aims to transform the facility with new food and drink venues, live entertainment and sustainability features.

Australia.- Crown Melbourne has launched the first major makeover in its 30-year history. Crown will invest around AU$200m (US$141.5m) in the integrated resort complex in Victoria’s Southbank.

The project will introduce around 15 new restaurants, bars and casual dining venues, many with views over the Yarra River, as well as upgraded public spaces and indoor-outdoor experiences to use Southbank’s appeal as a lifestyle destination. There will be a riverside gastropub, terrace dining areas and a Riverwalk precinct intended to draw both locals and tourists, including during high-traffic events such as the Australian Grand Prix.

The Palms will become the Crown Live Theatre, a performance space with seating for around 1,250 guests scheduled to open in late 2026 with a mix of Broadway-style shows, international residencies and large-scale live productions.

Bar and event areas within Crown Towers will be revamped along with the 28th-floor private events venue at Crown Metropol. Sustainability initiatives will include solar installations aimed at cutting carbon emissions by an estimated 23 per cent by 2027.

According to the company, the initiative underscores Crown’s strategic shift to diversify beyond traditional gambling into world-class food, beverage and entertainment experiences designed to appeal to broader audiences. “The project will create around 2,000 construction jobs, accelerate Victoria’s visitor economy, and reshape the Crown we know today,” said the company.

Crown Melbourne chief executive Ed Domingo told The Australian Financial Review: “This is really about repositioning Crown to be that again in the future for this next generation of customers and guests. Crown is very much open for business, as Victoria is open for business.“
