The suspects apprehended include the alleged owners and managers of online gambling sites.
Indonesia.- The Indonesian National Police’s Criminal Investigation Department (Bareskrim) has carried out an operation against an international online gambling network operating across multiple regions in the country. The move follows a string of complaints filed with the police between August and December last year.
According to Brigadier General Wira Satya, director of general crime at Bareskrim, operations were carried out simultaneously in Pamekasan Regency, Tangerang City, West Jakarta, South Jakarta, East Jakarta, North Jakarta, and Cianjur Regency, resulting in multiple arrests. Among the suspects apprehended are the alleged owners and managers of online gambling sites, financial administrators, account lessees and payment gateway operators.
Police say initial findings show the network raked in hundreds of billions of rupiah in a year. If convicted, suspects could get up to 20 years in prison and face fines of up to 10 billion IDR (US$600,000).
