A new survey by Citigroup shows resilient high-end demand in Macau, with average wagers per player rising 13 per cent year-on-year.
Macau.- The premium mass segment looks to have been robust during the 2026 Chinese New Year (CNY) period in Macau. The average wager per player climbing 13 per cent year-on-year to a record HKD29,625 (US$3,788), according to a proprietary table survey conducted by Citigroup.
The bank said total wagers observed during the festive period reached HKD24.4m (US$3.1m), up 17 per cent compared to CNY 2025. The number of premium mass players was up 3 per cent to 824. Analysts George Choi and Timothy Chau suggested this was evidence that premium mass demand remains resilient despite broader economic headwinds.
Activity at the top end of the market also strengthened. The survey identified 53 whales, compared to 49 a year earlier. Combined whale wagers totalled HKD11.3m (US$1.4m), with an average of HKD213,000 (US$27,000) per player. Seven of those players wagered HKD500,000 (US$64,000) or more, versus four during the previous CNY period.
Market share dynamics shifted, according to the report. Melco Resorts & Entertainment is reported to have had a 25 per cent share of total premium mass wager observed, up from 13 per cent a year earlier. Galaxy Entertainment Group ranked second with a 23 per cent share, down 1 percentage point year-on-year. Citi said it observed 12 whales at City of Dreams, the highest count among surveyed properties.
Analysts also pointed to potential recovery in the grind mass market, citing a 5 per cent rise in average baccarat minimum bets to HKD2,347 (US$300). Citigroup forecasts February 2026 gross gaming revenue of MOP20bn (US$2.48bn), implying 1 per cent year-on-year growth for the month and a combined 12 per cent increase for January and February.
