Seized cash was found to have been replaced with counterfeit bills.
The Philippines.- The Department of the Interior and Local Government (DILG) has placed six police officers under restrictive custody for allegedly stealing PHP13m ($230,000) from evidence seized during an October 2024 raid on a gambling operator.
According to the DILG, a court ruled in November that the search unlawful and ordered the return of the seized cash to the property owners. However, when the evidence containers were opened, only PHP128m (US$2.25m) was present in genuine notes while there was PHP13m in counterfeit bills.
DILG Secretary Jonvic Remulla said the six officers accused include the evidence custodian. They have been charged with crimes, including qualified theft, malversation of public funds, falsification of documents, and possession of counterfeit treasury or bank notes. They are being held under restrictive custody pending further investigation.
