Thailand.- Police in Bangkok have detained 94 Vietnamese citizens for allegedly operating online gambling websites. The arrests were made at a rented office in a high-end condominium on Phetchaburi Road, Huai Khwang district, following reports about suspected illegal activity.
Police reported that the single-storey office operated 24 hours a day, with at least 20 staff members per shift. The facility was heavily secured, and janitors were restricted to working in the front section. Some 69 men and 25 women were detained and 68 computers and around 500 mobile phones seized.
Police say Vietnamese-language gambling websites offered football betting and casino games, with transactions conducted in Vietnamese dong. One of the suspects told police he had recently graduated and had been recruited for a customer service role with a monthly salary of 30,000 baht (US$943). He said he entered the country with six Vietnamese friends on tourist visas and did not know he would be forced to work for an online gambling business.
Police aim to determine who was behind the operation and if there are additional locations in the city. They warned that online gambling remains illegal in Thailand and is punishable with severe penalties.
