Authorities detained more than 800 foreign nationals and seized hundreds of computers and phone.
Cambodia.- Police have detained more than 800 suspects in a raid at Xinli Casino in Preah Sihanouk province. The raid was carried out on February 10 by a combined task force of provincial police and military police under the direction of Preah Sihanouk’s Unified Command on the 18th and 19th floors of the building in Sihanoukville.
According to police statements and media reports, the detained are of multiple nationalities, including Chinese, Korean, Japanese, American, Filipino, Pakistani, Indian and Cambodian nationals. Officers also confiscated around 650 computers and 1,000 mobile phones believed to have been used in fraudulent operations.
The operation forms part of a campaign to dismantle the scam compounds that have proliferated in Cambodia in recent years, particularly in coastal hubs such as Sihanoukville. Authorities say they have carried out around 200 raids so far this year.
Senior minister Chhay Sinarith, of Cambodia’s Commission for Combating Online Scams, recently stated that some 11,000 scam workers have been deported and 173 alleged high-level crime figures arrested since the government intensified its enforcement drive late last year.
