Wagering by high-value players rose 72.3 per cent year on year to HKD8.1m.
Macau.- Investment banking company Citigroup has noted a 16.7 per cent increase in the number of high-value players in the Macau casino market in January, rising from 24 to 28.
As highlighted in the bank’s table survey for the month, wagering by these players rose 72.3 per cent year on year to HKD8.1m (US$1.04m), from HKD4.7m (US$0.60m) in January 2025. This equates to an average of about HKD290,000 (US$37,000) per player, up 49 per cent year on year.
Citi reported that its “Player of the Month” staked HKD1.0m (US$0.13m) at the Horizon Room at Galaxy Macau, operated by Galaxy Entertainment Group Ltd. Other notable wagers included a HKD850,000 (US$0.11m) high roller at the high-limit area of City of Dreams, run by Melco Resorts & Entertainment Ltd, and a HKD640,000 (US$0.08m) whale at Wynn Macau Ltd’s Chairman’s Club at Wynn Palace.
The bank attributed the rise in wagering levels to incentives such as concert tickets for top players, featuring acts including Blackpink in Hong Kong, Raymond Lam at the Venetian Arena, and Dylan Wang at Galaxy Entertainment’s Galaxy Arena.
In the premium mass segment, Citi said total wagered volume in its January survey increased by about 25 per cent year on year to HKD16.0m (US$2.06m). However, the number of premium mass players fell by around 11 per cent to 564. Average spending per player rose 41 per cent to HKD28,424 (US$3,650), from HKD20,160 (US$2,590) a year earlier.
According to Citi, Galaxy Entertainment regained the leading position in premium mass play in January with a market share of about 25 per cent, two percentage points lower than in January 2025. Melco Entertainment ranked second with 20.9 per cent, while Wynn Macau Ltd and Sands China followed with 20.3 per cent and 20.2 per cent, respectively.
