Japan.- The 2025 World Expo in Osaka has come to an end this week, meaning that work will now advance in earnest towards the creation of MGM Osaka, Japan’s first casino resort, and the planned tech and tourism hub that will surround it on Yumeshima Island.
MGM Osaka is a joint venture between MGM Resorts International and Orix Corporation. The US$3.9bn project, scheduled to open in 2030, will feature luxury hotels, convention facilities, entertainment spaces, and a regulated casino area. It is expected to draw around 20 million visitors per year.
Authorities envision a multi-phase redevelopment that will add leisure and commercial areas around the resort, including a race circuit, water park, and arena. Bidding for additional projects is set to open in 2026, with a focus on creating synergy between tourism, business, and innovation.
Governor Hirofumi Yoshimura said the project “will generate new demand in tourism and business, catalysing Osaka’s economic growth.” The 2025 World Expo is reported to have attracted over 25 million visitors.
