Police says suspects defrauded two Macau casinos out of HKD19m (US$2.4m).
China.- Macau’s Judiciary Police have arrested four individuals in Cotai for allegedly defrauding two Macau casinos out of HKD19m (US$2.4m). They were arrested on Monday, October 27, after allegedly using a fake document showing a balance of HKD48m (US$6.17m) to secure HKD10m (US$1.28m) in gambling credit.
The suspects, three Hong Kong nationals and one Macau resident, allegedly submitted a fake electronic bank statement from a Hong Kong bank to prove creditworthiness.
Vong Chi Hou, head of the Judiciary Police’s gaming-related crimes division, said that, on Monday, when the casino requested the return of non-negotiable chips advanced through a credit line, the suspects only returned chips worth HKD1,585,000 (US$203,959) leaving a shortfall of HKD8,415,000, (US$1,02m).
Police believe the suspects defrauded another casino out of HKD9 million (US$1.15m) in gambling credit and approached two other Macau operators but had applications rejected. Officers suspect other people were involved. Those arrested face potential charges of fraud and document forgery and have been handed over to the Public Prosecutions Office.
