The new charge will be implemented on privately managed access roads to support infrastructure maintenance.
Malaysia.- Genting Highlands will introduce a vehicle entry fee in the first half of 2026. The charge, which will apply to vehicles using the privately maintained Jalan Genting Highlands, could range between MYR2.50 (US$0.60) and MYR5.00 (US$1.20) per entry. Construction of the charging infrastructure is already underway.
The initiative is being implemented by Lingkaran Cekap Sdn Bhd, which recently took over operations of the road. According to the company, the fee is intended to help cover the costs of maintaining the 24-kilometre mountain route, including slope stabilisation, drainage systems and landslide prevention. It said the move would ensure long-term safety and reliability. Maintenance of the road and surrounding slopes has historically been funded by the Genting Malaysia Group since the 1960s.
The system will operate through cashless payments and licence plate recognition (LPR) technology, allowing vehicles to be automatically identified and charged at two main entry points: Genting Sempah and Gohtong Jaya. The fee will apply only to ascending traffic. Motorcycles are expected to be exempt in the initial phase.
