Chief Minister and Home Minister Pramod Sawant confirmed that the Cyber Crime Police Station issued takedown and blocking notices to internet service providers and domain registrars targeting unlicensed online betting and gambling platforms under Section 168 of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNSS), Section 79(3)(b) of India’s Information Technology Act, and relevant provisions of the IT Rules.
Authorities said the initiative reflects a multi-layered strategy to curb illegal online wagering. Police units across Goa were instructed to continuously monitor websites and social media platforms for betting-related activity. Police officers were also tasked with gathering intelligence within their jurisdictions, targeting individuals and networks involved in unlawful gambling operations.
A dedicated social media monitoring cell regularly submits reports on suspect platforms, leading to website blocking, the registration of FIRs and, where applicable, arrests and account freezes.
Beyond enforcement, the Goa government has emphasised preventive measures aimed at public awareness. Campaigns have been rolled out in schools, colleges and village panchayats to educate students and local communities about the illegality of online gambling and matka under the Goa, Daman and Diu Public Gambling Act, with particular focus on youth and vulnerable groups.
A cyber patrolling tool developed during the Goa Police Hackathon 2025 is currently being refined and is expected to be deployed soon. Once operational, the tool is intended to strengthen real-time cyber surveillance and detection capabilities further.
