India.- The Bombay High Court in Goa has temporarily blocked the entry of the new MV Deltin Royale casino vessel into the Mandovi River. The court said the 112-metre-long vessel cannot sail into Panaji Port without obtaining all required certifications and prior permission from the court. Another hearing is scheduled for July 6, meaning that the ship is now not expected to enter the river before the monsoon season begins.
The ruling followed a legal challenge filed by local activists and members of the Enough Is Enough movement, who oppose the new floating casino due to environmental, navigational and economic concerns. Petitioners argued that new vessel, which has a capacity for up to 2,000 passengers, would place additional pressure on the Mandovi River and could affect communities.
The, currently berthed at Mormugao Port, is intended to replace the MV Royale Flotel, which has a capacity for only 70 passengers. However opponents claimed that Goa’s gambling legislation does not allow a direct replacement of one casino vessel with another significantly larger ship under the same licence. According to the petitioners, the new vessel exceeds the combined capacity of all existing offshore casino vessels currently operating on the Mandovi River.
