Greyhound Racing NSW announces support initiatives

Financial and well-being support initiatives have been launched to assist participants affected by track closures.

Australia.- Greyhound Racing NSW (GRNSW) has announced a series of financial and well-being support initiatives for industry participants affected by track closures. The move follows the implementation of its Racing Optimisation programme.

GRNSW confirmed late last year that racing would cease at several locations, including Muswellbrook and Broken Hill by June 30, 2026, and Wagga Wagga within the following 12 months, pending the completion of upgrades at nearby Temora. GRNSW says it will provide mental health and well-being services through its partnership with Sonder, offering 24/7 assistance, alongside direct support from Participant Welfare Officer George Zaiter.

GRNSW acknowledged the unique challenges faced by participants in Broken Hill due to its location far from major racing hubs. A dedicated financial support framework will be introduced to assist local trainers and owners. The programme will support participants in relocating greyhounds to other regions where racing can continue, or transitioning them into retirement.

Steve Griffin, chief executive officer, said: “We are very aware that changes to the racing footprint can create uncertainty and practical challenges for participants. Our focus is to ensure that everyone impacted receives appropriate support and that the welfare of greyhounds and our participants remains at the centre of every decision we make.

“Supporting participants through periods of change is critical to maintaining confidence in the industry and ensuring its future strength. The industry in NSW is evolving, and our responsibility is to ensure that it remains sustainable, responsible and focused on the welfare of the greyhound.”
