Greyhound Racing NSW will not proceed with the purchase of land for a proposed new greyhound racing track.
Australia.- Greyhound Racing NSW (GRNSW) has announced that it will not move forward with the planned acquisition of land in Tamworth, effectively shelving the project for a proposed new greyhound racing track in the city in New South Wales.
In 2023, GRNSW entered into a Call to Option with Harness Racing NSW (HRNSW) for land on Burgmann’s Lane on the outskirts of Tamworth. HRNSW has now refunded GRNSW the deposit which was paid for the property.
“With its strong roots in the sport, GRNSW remains totally committed to racing in the New England area and will continue to look for alternative potential sites in the region for racing,” the organisation said.
Industry stakeholders had seen the project as a potential boost for regional racing infrastructure. Tamworth Greyhound Racing Club president Robert Munn told The Greyhound Recorder that the decision not to proceed is “a kick in the guts for the community.”
The decision comes amid concerns about the sustainability of the greyhound racing sector in New South Wales. Industry leaders have warned that the current funding framework is leading to declining revenue and financial strain for racing clubs and participants.
