Australia.- Greyhound Racing NSW (GRNSW) has launched a support initiative aimed at enhancing welfare for racing participants and their greyhounds in New South Wales. The Participant Welfare Officer (PWO) Service will provide immediate assistance in crisis situations where participants may struggle to meet care obligations for their animals due to unforeseen circumstances.
Led by George Zaiter, the service will respond to issues like medical emergencies, natural disasters, and other crisis scenarios affecting handlers and their greyhounds. Participants will be offered access to a dedicated mental health support service through a partnership with Sonder.
Temporary care support will be contingent on evidence of a sustainable plan that ensures compliance with animal care standards. Permanent care arrangements require participants to cancel their industry registration.
