Australia.- Greyhound Racing Victoria (GRV) celebrated the 30th anniversary of its Greyhound Adoption Program (GAP) with an event at Parliament Gardens this week. Political representatives attended along with industry stakeholders and community partners.
Launched in 1996, GAP has facilitated the rehoming of approximately 20,000 retired racing greyhounds so far. During the event, GRV chair Tom Salom described the programme as a benchmark for welfare standards within the racing sector, and said that structured regulation and sustained funding have played a central role in its development. He added that GAP’s evolution reflects broader industry efforts to strengthen transparency and accountability around animal care.
A new video outlined the lifecycle of a Victorian greyhound, from early development and racing to retirement and adoption,. Victoria’s Racing Minister Anthony Carbines, Shadow Racing Minister Tim Bull and former Premier Denis Napthine were among those in attendance.
