GRNSW reports drop in serious on-track injuries in New South Wales greyhound racing

Data shows a reduction in serious and catastrophic greyhound racing injuries.

Australia.- Greyhound Racing NSW (GRNSW) has reported a reduction in serious on-track injuries at New South Wales racing venues. Serious injuries, defined as those keeping a greyhound out of racing for 60 days or more, fell by 14 per cent over the past six months, from 202 cases to 168.

The data also shows a decline in catastrophic injuries, with just four on-track deaths recorded since July 1, 2025, compared with seven during the same period of the precious year and 16 in the 2024-25 fiscal year. GRNSW noted a broader downward trend in on-track euthanasias. It said the figures show the impact of enhanced safety protocols and targeted welfare strategies.

Steve Griffin, chief executive officer of GRNSW, said: “The welfare of our animals is and always will be paramount, and that is why we continue to strive in all areas of safety for racing. There are numerous reasons for the significant improvement in the serious injury rates, including intense scrutiny, monitoring and work on track surfaces around NSW, expansive education for trainers and more stringent pre-race checks of greyhounds before they race. These results must be contributed to everyone across the industry who are working hard for the safety and welfare of our animals.”

He added: “We continue to strive for zero unnecessary euthanasia on our racetracks and our Greyhound Care Scheme (GCS) continues to be a key factor in the substantial drop in on track deaths, with greyhounds able to be transported immediately and receive the best medical treatment if they are badly injured on track, with the Scheme offering financial support for the treatment and/or surgery required.

GRNSW added that the industry is experiencing its longest recorded stretch without a catastrophic injury at 83 consecutive days. The organisation also reaffirmed its commitment to additional race injury reduction strategies in the coming year.
