India.- Police in Ludhiana, Punjab, have arrested a man named Rahul Goyal, from Shaheed Bhagat Singh Nagar, for allegedly taking bets on Indian Premier League (IPL) matches. Officers confiscated a laptop, five mobile phones and ₹5,000 in cash. Two other men, Saifi Goyal, also known as Shanty, from Punjab Mata Nagar, and Rajesh Bahal from Chhabra Colony, are wanted.
Sub-inspector Gurpreet Singh said the raid was executed following a tip-off. He said the mobile phone numbers had been obtained using forged documents. A case has been filed under various sections of the Indian Penal Code and the Gambling Act at Dugri police station.
A report by the Think Change Forum (TCF) has estimated that tax authorities in India are losing Rs 3.9 lakh crore (US$48.8bn) annually to illegal betting and gambling websites. The report suggests the illegal offshore betting market is now valued at approximately Rs 8.2 lakh crore, with an annual growth rate of 30 per cent.
