The Ministry of Communication and Digital reported a 128 per cent increase in gambling-related spam comments.
Indonesia.- The Ministry of Communication and Digital (Komdigi) says it has identified a sharp increase in spam comments promoting online gambling on major social media platforms in Indonesia. It attributes the activity to a coordinated international network using automated bots to target high-profile accounts.
According to Komdigi, gambling-related spam comments rose by 128 per cent over the past two weeks compared to the average recorded between January and June 2026. Authorities said the campaign intensified following the start of the 2026 FIFA World Cup on June 11.
Director General of Digital Space Supervision Alexander Sabar said the network uses automated systems to monitor social media activity in real time. Once posts from high-reach accounts begin generating significant engagement, bots flood comment sections with gambling advertisements and links to betting websites.
The ministry also detected the use of fake accounts on Instagram, Facebook and TikTok. Network analysis conducted by Komdigi linked the operation to transnational affiliate networks with suspected connections in India and Brazil. The ministry said it will meet with Meta representatives in a bid to strengthen enforcement on Facebook and Instagram.
