Indonesia.- President Prabowo Subianto used his address at the APEC Economic Leaders’ Meeting (AELM) in Gyeongju, South Korea, on Saturday (November 1) to call for a global effort to tackle transnational crimes, including illegal online gambling as well as smuggling, corruption, and drug trafficking.
Prabowo said that Indonesia loses around US$8bn each year to outflows of funds caused by online gambling. He also stressed the importance of technological progress for national growth and said his administration is dedicated to strengthening digital education and technological literacy, as well as adopting artificial intelligence (AI).
Prabowo said: “We are entering a new era marked by rapid advances in high technology, particularly AI. We also understand that we must confront the challenges posed by demographic change.”
The two-day summit held from October 31 to November 1 was chaired and hosted by South Korean president Lee Jae Myung. In a recent statement, Lee vowed to combat transnational crimes through strengthened global partnerships and a multi-agency effort.
