Indonesia.- Puan Maharani has called on the Indonesian government to strengthen digital literacy programmes to help prevent children from being exposed to online gambling. Maharani said online gambling in Indonesia had entered a “more worrying phase” and that children are among the groups most vulnerable to exposure.
Maharani cited reports that nearly 200,000 Indonesian children have been exposed to online gambling. She said the situation required coordinated intervention involving multiple institutions and sectors. She also called for additional programmes focused on character development and children’s mental health.
The lawmaker stressed that schools alone cannot monitor children’s digital activity and that families must be the first line of protection. Maharani also called for stronger enforcement of existing regulations aimed at protecting minors online, including Government Regulation Number 17 of 2025 on the Governance of Electronic System Implementation in Child Protection, urging sanctions against digital service providers that allow the promotion of online gambling content.
“The state must not be outpaced by online gambling networks that operate massively and trans-nationally,” Maharani said.
