South Korea’s Kangwon Land will renovate 757 hotel and condominium rooms before the launch of its second casino.
South Korea.- Kangwon Land, the operator of South Korea’s only casino open to local residents, has announced plans to invest around KRW200bn (US$135.4m) in a major renovation of accommodation. It aims for completion ahead of the opening of a second casino venue in 2028.
According to a company statement, the refurbishment programme will cover 757 hotel and condominium units, around 41 per cent of the resort’s 1,827 accommodation units. Work is expected to begin in April.
The work will include upgrades to 477 rooms at the Grand Hotel Main Tower, scheduled for completion by April 2028, and 280 rooms at the Mountain Condominium, which are expected to be finished by October 2027. The top floor of the Grand Hotel Main Tower will also be redesigned to include a new lounge for members.
All of the rooms to be done up date back to the opening of the resort’s main casino in 2003. Online reservations for these rooms have been suspended since March 1.
The project forms part of Kangwon Land’s long-term“K-HIT 1.0” development strategy, a multi-year plan running through 2035 that aims to modernise the resort and expand its tourism offering. A second casino building is expected to open in early 2028 adding additional gaming tables and machines to the resort’s inventory.
Earlier this month, Kangwon Land announced the appointment of Nam Han-Gyu as its new interim chief executive officer. The leadership change follows the departure of Choi Cheol-Kyoo, who had been serving as vice-president and executive director.
Kangwon Land reported total sales for 2025 of KRW1.48tn (US$1.03bn), a 3.5 per cent increase from a year earlier.
