Members want a meeting with minister of communications and sports, Anika Wells.
Australia.- A group of Labor MPs has called on the minister of communications and sports, Anika Wells, to address the delays in gambling advertising reforms. According to the group, support for reforming gambling advertising is gaining momentum across parliament and among the general public.
Members feel their concerns are not being heard and say a meeting with Wells is urgently needed to advance the reforms.
The increasing pressure to tackle online gambling ads stems from a June 2023 committee report, chaired by the late Labor MP Peta Murphy, which recommended a phased ban on such ads alongside more than 30 other reforms. In documents recently released under freedom of information laws, Wells’ department reportedly acknowledged the strong backing for an ad ban but expressed concern about the potential effects on sporting codes and media sectors.
Labor MPs say they will continue to push for action, warning that without a clear timeline for implementing the reforms, public dissatisfaction and parliamentary pressure are likely to grow.
