Australia.- The New South Wales regulator, Liquor & Gaming NSW (L&GNSW), has published its Regulatory Priorities for January to December 2026. It will focus on minimising gambling harm, reinforcing casino integrity, and addressing alcohol-related risk hotspots across the state.
A key focus area will be gambling operator marketing practices and customer retention strategies. The regulator will examine how online bookmakers attract and retain customers, particularly through direct and affiliate marketing, social media partnerships, and potential barriers to account closure. VIP programmes and targeted advertising by casino and gaming venue operators will also fall under increased scrutiny, amid concerns that such practices may heighten the risk of gambling harm, especially among vulnerable individuals.
Casino governance and integrity represent another major pillar of the 2026 agenda. The regulator will assess how casinos manage breach reporting, risk identification and mitigation processes, and corruption prevention frameworks. Attention will also be paid to corporate culture, including staff perspectives on compliance and ethical conduct, as part of a broader effort to ensure transparency and accountability within the sector.
In addition to gambling-related oversight, the authority will target alcohol-related harm hotspots, focusing on areas with rising rates of alcohol-fuelled violence, Special Entertainment Precincts, and high-risk events such as major sporting fixtures.
