Macau received 3.65 million visitors in January 2026

International tourist numbers rose 15.5 per cent compared with the same period last year.


Macau.- The Statistics and Census Service (DSEC) has reported that Macau received 3.65 million visitor arrivals in January 2026. The figure was flat year-on-year.

Mainland Chinese visitor arrivals declined 1.6 per cent to 2.71 million, while those using the Individual Visit Scheme were 9.6 per cent lower at 1.45 million. According to the DSEC, the decrease was largely due to the strong comparative base because of the earlier Chinese New Year holiday in 2025, which drove higher visitor numbers in January.

Hong Kong visitor numbers fell 1.3 per cent to 570,000, while arrivals from Taiwan rose by 20.7 per cent to around 93,000. International tourists numbered about 278,000, up 15.5 per cent compared with the same period last year.

In Southeast Asia, arrivals from South Korea grew 14.5 per cent to 75,000. The Philippines recorded around 45,000 visitors, down 6.3 per cent, while Malaysia rose 52.3 per cent to about 18,000. Thailand arrivals surged 80.5 per cent to 18,000. Indonesia visitor numbers declined 21.8 per cent to 17,000.

Arrivals from Japan were down 1.6 per cent to 12,000, while those from India were up 54.1 per cent to around 10,000 and those from the United States increased by 4.7 per cent to 13,000.

Overnight stays fell 6.6 per cent to 1.39 million, whereas same-day arrivals rose 4.6 per cent to 2.25 million. The average length of stay was steady at 1 day, while overnight visitors stayed slightly longer, averaging 2.3 days.

The average hotel occupancy rate rose 0.7 percentage point year-on-year. Five-star hotels reported 95.9 per cent occupancy, up 2.4 points, while four-star and three-star hotels recorded 85.2 per cent and 85.7 per cent, respectively, both lower than a year earlier.
