Gambling-related cases rose nearly 134 per cent due to new measures against currency exchange.
Macau.- During the Public Prosecutions Office’s annual report presentation, prosecutor general Tong Hio Fong highlighted a rise in crime linked to gambling in the 2024–25 judicial year.
According to Macao Daily, he said there were over 15,000 criminal cases in Macau overall, a 2 per cent decrease compared to the previous year. Despite this overall decline, gambling-related crimes increased by nearly 134 per cent to 760, mainly due to the new ban on unlicensed money exchange for gambling under the Law to Combat Crimes of Illegal Gambling enacted in late October 2024. This accounted for 410 cases.
The Public Prosecutions Office closed 15,204 cases during the year, an increase of 10.7 per cent. Of that total, 3,766 led to prosecutions, while 11,113 were archived. Prosecutors also intervened in over 1,000 family and juvenile protection cases, a 13 per cent rise year-on-year.
