Malaysia police arrest 72 for alleged illegal gambling operations

Authorities recovered over US$13.000 in cash, along with various pieces of gambling equipment used in the operation.

Malaysia.- Malaysian authorities have arrested 72 individuals suspected of involvement in illegal cockfighting and gambling during a targeted raid at an orchard near Bayu Perdana Apartments in Klang. The operation, conducted under Ops Cakar, aimed to dismantle an illicit gambling syndicate that had been allegedly operating for months in a secluded plantation area.

According to Selangor police chief Datuk Shazeli Kahar, the raid led to the detention of two suspected organisers and 70 participants. Officers discovered that the illegal activities comprised both cockfighting and a local gambling game known as “bola golek,” reportedly drawing crowds every Sunday.

Police recovered RM55,075 (US$13.560) in cash, along with various pieces of gambling equipment used in the operation. In addition, officers from the Selangor Veterinary Services Department found 14 live chickens and four deceased birds, believed to have been involved in the cockfights.

The group of suspects includes 41 Malaysian nationals and 31 foreign nationals, with ages ranging from 20 to 70. Authorities allege that bets at the events could reach up to RM10,000 per match, signalling significant illegal wagering activity.

Those apprehended are currently being held at the Klang Selatan district police headquarters pending further investigation. They face potential charges under Malaysia’s Common Gaming Houses Act 1953, the Animal Welfare Act 2015, and the Immigration Act 1959/63.

Shazeli emphasised that enforcement efforts against illegal gambling and related offences will continue and urged members of the public to report suspicious activities to help authorities curb unlawful operations.
