Malaysian government to meet with Meta executives on illegal online gambling ads

The communications minister is calling for action over gambling content.

Malaysia.- Communications minister Datuk Fahmi Fadzil, is to meet Meta representatives on September 22 to address online gambling content on Facebook. Fadzil said the majority of content taken down from Facebook was related to online gambling, including posts that promote illegal gambling but that it was still too easy to find such material on the platform.

“Complaints that we have submitted from the beginning until now, for example, if an online gambling advertisement is paid for using a credit card, Facebook should know that this is content not permitted in Malaysia,” he said.

He said the aim was not to ban or shut down Facebook but to take a constructive stance. “It is to deliver the message that we must use the internet safely, and that in fact we have the ability to make the internet safer, especially for children and families,” Fadzil said.

Last month, the Malaysian Communications and Multimedia Commission (MCMC) said it has removed 321,012 gambling-related posts since January 2022. Deputy communications minister Teo Nie Ching said takedowns carried out under the Malaysian Communications and Multimedia Act 1998, also targeted 119,273 posts linked to fraud, 43,585 containing obscene material, 35,420 involving bullying or sexual harassment, and 38,818 flagged as false information.

The MCMC works in coordination with the Royal Malaysia Police (PDRM), the Ministry of Domestic Trade and Cost of Living (KPDN), and Bank Negara Malaysia to remove online material. It’s launched AIFA, an AI-powered chatbot that helps the public verify suspicious content and complements the fact-checking portal Sebenarnya.my.

From this year, all social media platforms operating in Malaysia are required to obtain an ASP(C) licence and comply with a new Code of Conduct to safeguard minors.
