Myanmar cancels over 100,000 SIM cards allegedly linked to online gambling

The ministry has also reported the closure of over 1,000 mobile wallet accounts.

Myanmar.- In a parliamentary session on June 19, Ministry of Digital Development and Communications Deputy Minister U Thet Win Aung told lawmakers that 143,409 SIM cards were deactivated between March 2025 and May 2026 after being identified as sending large volumes of identical messages linked to online gambling promotions. In the same period, 1,120 SIM cards allegedly linked to illegal financial accounts were also terminated.

The minister also reported the closure of over 1,000 mobile wallet accounts tied to gambling operations, with funds in those accounts confiscated and transferred to the state under legal procedures.

Meanwhile, between January 2025 and April 2026, access to 102 gambling-related websites and applications was blocked through IP restrictions. The Ministry said enforcement measures will remain in place across telecom and mobile payment services to detect and disrupt suspicious activity at earlier stages.
