The Nepal Telecommunications Authority (NTA) has told service providers to block access to betting applications and websites.
Nepal.- The government of Nepal has mandated the shutdown of all betting applications and related websites operating within its borders. The directive forms part of a 100-point governance reform plan approved by the cabinet on Friday, March 27.
The move, outlined in point 42 of the governance action plan, tasks the Ministry of Communications and Information Technology with the responsibility of blocking the platforms. Following the order, the ministry issued a notice to the Nepal Telecommunications Authority (NTA), instructing all service providers to block access to betting applications and websites within 24 hours.
According to officials, the measure is aimed at curbing illegal gambling activity and strengthening oversight of Nepal’s online environment, where betting platforms have largely operated without restriction. All forms of betting, including advertising and promotional activities, contravene the Criminal Code 2074 and the Advertisement Regulation Act but enforcement efforts have been limited.
An NTA spokesperson confirmed that enforcement had now started, with at least 16 betting websites marked for closure. Their names were not disclosed.
The ministry has warned the public against using or promoting betting apps or websites. Individuals found engaging in betting may face confiscation of illegal earnings, up to one year of imprisonment and fines of up to Rs 10,000 (US$66) under existing legislation.
