Nepal.- Authorities say more than 7,000 betting-linked apps and web platforms have been taken offline in Nepal following coordinated action between the Nepal Telecommunications Authority (NTA) and internet service providers. The enforcement effort is being carried out under a government directive.
NTA deputy director Surya Prasad Lamichhane said service providers have been ordered to monitor, detect and immediately disable illegal gambling platforms. He said the authority has so far received more than 50 complaints in a week through phone calls, emails and other reporting channels, all of which were acted upon as part of the enforcement drive.
The crackdown follows a cabinet decision adopted on March 27 under a 100-point governance reform plan. While the Ministry of Communications and Information Technology is responsible for issuing instructions, the NTA carries out enforcement through internet service providers.
Nepal’s Criminal Code 2074 explicitly prohibits gambling, with offenders facing fines of up to Rs 10,000 and imprisonment of up to one year.
