Japan.- There’s been some speculation that the election of Sanae Takaichi as the first female prime minister of Japan could bode well for the possibility of more integrated casino resorts (IR) in the country.
President of Japan’s Liberal Democratic Party, Takaichi was elected with support from the Osaka-based Japan Innovation Party, Ishin no Kai, which has been in favour of casino resorts as a means for regional economic growth.
Ishin no Kai is led by Hirofumi Yoshimura, the governor of Osaka prefecture, where Japan’s first integrated resort (IR), Orix and MGM’s MGM Osaka, is expected to open in 2030. There had already been some expectation that Japan might open another round of bidding for casino licences after only one out of a possible three was granted the first time around. However, it remains to be seen whether Takaichi’s election makes this more likely.
