Australia.- A new study by Roy Morgan Research has revealed that nearly 3.5 million Australians admit to having problematic or at-risk gambling habits. Some 622,000 identify as problem gamblers, a 22 per cent rise from last year.
The survey, which polled almost 17,000 Australians over 18 years old, found that problem gambling is more prevalent among younger people. Most participants who admitted to struggling with problem gambling are under 35, and 4.6 per cent are between 18-24 years old.
The research also found that 3.7 per cent of Australians experiencing mortgage stress and 4.1 per cent facing extreme mortgage stress are problem gamblers. According to the 2024 HILDA Survey report, Australians spent over $31bn on gambling in the past year, the highest amount on record.
