The comments come as the country prepares for the launch of a regulatory framework for online casinos.
Australian gambling ad restrictions from January 1, 2027, will include limits on daytime television ads, a full ban during live sports broadcasts, and tighter rules on radio advertising and endorsements by athletes and celebrities.
The DIA signalled that rules in New Zealand could incorporate elements similar to Australia’s model, including restricting ads during programming with significant child audiences, banning sponsorships and endorsements and limiting ad placements where more than 20 per cent of viewers are under 18. Officials also pointed to the Racing Industry Amendment Act 2025 as providing a legal foundation for potential future controls.
New Zealand’s Online Casino Gambling Bill is expected to come into effect in May, with licensing to open in July. The regime allows for up to 15 operators.
