A dedicated addiction countermeasures centre is planned for 2029 as Japan prepares for the launch of its first authorised casino resort.
Japan.- Authorities in Japan’s Osaka Prefecture are planning to open a dedicated gambling addiction countermeasures centre in 2029, a year ahead of the scheduled late-2030 launch of MGM Osaka as Japan’s first regulated casino. The JPY1.5tn (US$9.8bn) integrated resort is under development on Yumeshima Island in Osaka Bay.
According to local media reports, the planned facility will provide intervention, consultation and treatment services for gambling addiction, as well as support for families. It is also expected to play a role in training medical professionals to identify and treat gambling-related disorders.
The location of the centre has yet to be determined. It will be launched under the basic ordinance for countermeasures regarding gambling addiction, which was approved by the prefectural assembly in October 2022 and enacted later that year.
Ahead of the centre’s opening, authorities are expected to roll out trial online consultation services from April to connect individuals with gambling-related problems and their families to lawyers and private support organisations. The interim measure reflects growing concern over the potential social impact of expanded casino gaming even before MGM Osaka begins operations.
