Pennsylvania’s Gaming Revenue Reaches $5.89 Billion for FY2024, Driven by Online and Land-Based Growth
The Pennsylvania Gaming Control Board (PGCB) has released its latest annual report, showcasing a remarkable year for the state’s gaming industry. For FY2024, Pennsylvania’s legalized gaming revenue surged by 6.8%, reaching an impressive $5.89 billion. This growth spanned both land-based and online markets, highlighting Pennsylvania’s evolving gaming landscape.
One of the most significant contributors to this success was the combined casino revenue from slots and table games, which totaled $3.4 billion for the fiscal year. This revenue stream continues to anchor Pennsylvania’s gaming industry, reflecting strong player engagement at the state’s 17 land-based casinos.
The iGaming sector also experienced robust growth, welcoming six new sites to the state’s regulated lineup. Players now have access to 22 licensed iGaming platforms, offering a wide range of casino-style games, including slots, table games, and poker. This expansion fueled a 27% year-over-year increase in iGaming revenue, reaching a remarkable $1.9 billion. This surge underscores the rising popularity of online gambling and Pennsylvania’s success in fostering a safe and regulated digital gaming environment.
In addition to casino and iGaming, sports betting has become a key player in the state’s gaming ecosystem. Players statewide wagered close to $8.1 billion on sports during the fiscal year. This activity generated a total annual revenue of $486 million, highlighting Pennsylvania’s position as a leading market for legal sports betting.
Tax revenue derived from legalized gambling also paints a positive picture, with the commonwealth amassing $2.54 billion in tax receipts. This substantial figure reflects the broader economic impact of Pennsylvania’s regulated gambling industry, contributing significantly to state funds and public welfare programs.
The PGCB has played a pivotal role in shaping this success. Over the past year, it authorized 20 consent agreements negotiated by its Office of Enforcement Counsel (OEC) and imposed more than $0.7 million in civil penalties and fines, ensuring compliance and integrity across the industry. The Office of Compulsive and Problem Gambling (OCPG) has been at the forefront of promoting responsible gaming, organizing outreach events and distributing resources to assist individuals with gambling disorders. Through these efforts, the state emphasizes the importance of responsible gaming while embracing industry growth.
The PGCB, established in 2004, has overseen a dynamic expansion of gambling activities in the state, regulating everything from video gaming terminals (VGTs) to fantasy sports contests. It now oversees operations at 17 land-based casinos, 18 retail sports wagering locations, 12 online sports betting platforms, and 22 sites for online casino-type games. Additionally, the state boasts 74 truck stop establishments with VGTs and nine online fantasy sports contest sites.
The PGCB’s commitment to responsible gaming is a cornerstone of its approach. In the past year, the OCPG actively attended outreach events, offering resources and information on gambling disorder assistance. It also provided materials directing the public to toll-free helplines for treatment and referral services. This ongoing effort aligns with Pennsylvania’s strategy to promote a balanced and socially responsible gaming environment.
Pennsylvania’s gaming industry continues to break new ground, with $5.89 billion in revenue for FY2024 highlighting the success of both land-based and online markets. The state’s balanced approach, focusing on growth and responsible gaming, sets an example for other markets. With ongoing regulatory advancements and a commitment to player welfare, Pennsylvania is well-positioned to maintain its status as a leader in the gaming industry. As the market expands, players and operators alike can look forward to a future of sustainable and responsible growth.
