India.- Police in Puri have carried out a series of raids resulting in more than 20 arrests and the seizure of over INR860,000 (US$9,770) in cash under the ongoing Operation Chakra. One operation saw a raid in Khadipada village under the jurisdiction of Puri Sadar police station. Some 14 peolpe were detained and INR770,000 (US$8,700) seized along with 12 packs of playing cards, 60 plastic tokens, two cars, and six motorcycles.
The raid followed a tip-off. “We are committed to dismantling such illegal setups and ensuring public safety,” said superintendent Prateek Singh.
Days earlier, six gamblers were arrested in raid conducted at a hotel under Sea Beach police station, where officers confiscated INR90,000 (US$1,022) in cash and gambling paraphernalia. According to officials, nearly 80 people have been arrested so far under Operation Chakra.
Police have urged residents to report gambling activities by calling 112 or contacting local authorities.
