Australia.- New Zealand and South Sydney Rabbitohs rugby league hooker Brandon Smith has been charged with supplying dangerous drugs and with using or disclosing inside knowledge to facilitate betting activity.
Authorities issued the 29-year-old player with a summons on August 20, and he is expected to appear before Southport Magistrates Court on September 18. Police said investigations by the Organised Crime Gangs Group and Taskforce Maxima remain ongoing.
No details of the information Smith is alleged to have disclosed has been released. The Rabbitohs acknowledged the charges and confirmed they had reported the matter to the NRL’s Integrity Unit. CEO Blake Solly said no suspension had been imposed, and reports suggest Smith intends to plead not guilty.
