Singapore.- The Ministry of Home Affairs (MHA) has announced Hoong Wee Teck as the new chairman of the Gambling Regulatory Authority (GRA) with effect from today (April 1). He takes the helm from Tan Tee How, who had held the position since 2018.
Hoong joined the GRA as deputy chairman earlier this year. Before that, he led the Singapore Police Force (SPF) as commissioner for 11 years following a 38-year career in the service. His tenure saw the establishment of the Anti-Scam Command and the formation of Emergency Response Teams in response to terrorism threats. He was also credited with making the police force more technology focused.
The ministry commended Tan Tee How for overseeing the transition from being a casino regulator into a national authority overseeing all gambling activities. It said that during Tan’s tenure, the GRA was able to fulfil its mandate of “keeping gambling in Singapore free from criminal influence, and minimising its harms to Singapore society.”
Singapore’s casino sector operates under a duopoly structure comprising Resorts World Sentosa, operated by a subsidiary of Genting Singapore, and Marina Bay Sands, run by a unit of Las Vegas Sands Corp.
