Four men have been charged.
Singapore.- The Singapore Police Force (SPF) has arrested seven alleged members of a transnational betting syndicate. Four of the suspects, Singaporean men aged between 28 and 53, have been charged with conducting illegal betting under the Gambling Control Act 2022.
The investigation began after reports surfaced in March 2023 of victims creating gambling accounts on what appeared to be a legitimate website. Victims were asked to transfer funds to anonymous bank accounts in exchange for digital gambling credits, initially receiving small payouts to gain their trust. When they tried to withdraw further winnings, they were asked for additional deposits or larger balances
Information provided by the FBI and tech company Meta helped Singapore authorities trace the group’s activity and financial movements. Officers from the Criminal Investigation Department and the Police Intelligence Department carried out coordinated raids across multiple locations, including Bukit Batok, Hougang, and Pasir Ris, seizing SG$500,000 (US$386,000) worth of assets such as cash, bank accounts, luxury items, and electronic devices.
Preliminary investigations suggest the website was hosted overseas and targeted victims across several Asian countries.
