New investigative teams in Seoul and Gyeonggi Nambu will focus on monitoring and dismantling online platforms used to advertise and operate illegal gambling.
South Korea.- Dedicated cyber investigation teams have been created to target online vice crimes, including illegal online gambling, in South Korea. The National Police Agency’s Vice Crime Cyber Investigation Teams at Seoul Metropolitan Police Agency and the Gyeonggi Nambu Police Agency are the first of their kind in the country.
The two regional agencies have converted existing vice crime investigation teams into cyber-focused units. The Seoul Metropolitan Police Agency has assigned seven investigators to its team, while the Gyeonggi Nambu Police Agency has assigned six. Personnel were reportedly selected based on their experience in cyber investigations or related departments.
Traditionally, vice crime enforcement in South Korea has focused on physical locations such as illegal gambling parlours. However, police acknowledge that many operators now use digital platforms to promote services, recruit players and manage gambling activity.
Authorities also plan to coordinate with the Korea Communications Standards Commission to block access to illegal websites linked to vice crimes. Police intend to combine criminal investigations with administrative measures to tackle operators that repeatedly relaunch under different domain names,
