South Korea.- The Gangwon Provincial Police Agency has announced that it has arrested 14 people, including the alleged leader of what it says was South Korea’s largest illegal online gambling operation. Offices say the Philippines-based group handled transactions worth KRW5.3tn (US$3.7bn) in just seven months.
According to police, the ringleader, dubbed “A” planned the scheme while serving a prison sentence in 2020 for similar offences. After his release, he recruited developers and established an office disguised as a server rental company, they say. Between November 2021 and March 2025, the group reportedly built and sold 266 gambling websites, collecting KRW3m (US$2,100) a month in fees.
Police seized KRW480m (US$338,000) in cash, while pre-indictment seizure and preservation measures were taken on KRW3.35bn (US$2.3m) in criminal proceeds. Officers said that while previous arrests targeted individual gambling operators or site developers, this case represents the first successful takedown of a distribution-level vendor company structure.
