South Korea.- President Lee Jae Myung has ordered a crackdown on transnational crime, including scams, online gambling and drug trafficking. Lee issued a directive during an emergency interagency meeting on Thursday, October 23.
According to presidential spokesperson Kang Yu-jung, the government will set up an integrated consultative body and a special response unit comprising intelligence agencies and relevant ministries. The Foreign Ministry has pledged to step up victim support and information-sharing via diplomatic missions, while the Justice Ministry said it will streamline the extradition of international criminals.
The National Intelligence Service (NIS) is to increase intelligence collection on overseas crimel groups, and the FSC proposed measures to block the use of illegal bank accounts in criminal operations.
The annouuncement comes decision follows the case of a South Korean college student who was kidnapped and tortured to death in a scam centre in Cambodia.
