Ten people have been arrested.
South Korea.- Police have dismantled an alleged illegal online gambling ring. The Daegu National Police Agency’s Cybercrime Investigation Team announced the arrest of 10 individuals, including the alleged ringleader, a man in his 30s identified as “A.” Seven suspects, including A, are in custody, charged with violating the National Sports Promotion Act.
The syndicate, allegedly ran an illegal gambling site from February 2022 to July 2023, recruiting over and processing transactions totalling KRW44bn (US$31m). Operating from Cambodia to evade detection, the group allegedly used tourist visas and a structured hierarchy with roles for deposits, withdrawals, member management and surveillance.
Police seized KRW270m (US$193,000) in cash and froze KRW120m (US$86,000). Non-custodial charges were filed against 174 gamblers. The police are collaborating with Interpol to pursue suspects abroad.
