Taiwan.- Taipei police dismantled an alleged illegal gambling operation early Monday morning as part a Lunar New Year crackdown. They detained 33 people.
A special task force from the Taipei Police Department’s Criminal Investigation Division targeted a venue on Section 1 of Anhe Road in Daan District at around 3am on a search warrant issued by the Taipei District Court. Police said those taken into custody included operators, staff members and patrons.
Police seized NT$910,000 (US$29,000) in cash, along with radio communication devices, surveillance systems and gambling chips with an estimated value of NT$577.56m (US$18m). Alleged staff including a 28-year-old man identified by his surname Chen were referred to the Taipei District Prosecutors’ Office on suspicion of violating gambling provisions under the Criminal Code.
The assumed gamblers will be handled separately under the Social Order Maintenance Act, police said.
