Frequent draws and lower entry prices have driven growing participation by Thai players in Laos’ state-run lottery.
Thailand.- Thai lottery players are reportedly increasingly participating in the Laos national lottery despite participation being prohibited under Thai law. According to Bangkok Post, the lottery, known in Laos as Huay Phathana and operated by the country’s Ministry of Finance, has gained a strong following among Thai bettors who take part through informal sales networks and online platforms.
Draws are held three times a week: on Monday, Wednesday and Friday evenings, providing far more frequent opportunities than Thailand’s own Government Lottery, which conducts draws only twice per month. The low ticket price of around LAK1,000 (US$0,04), makes participation accessible to a wide base of players.
The Bangkok Post reports that many players follow results closely, often checking the numbers as soon as they are announced, although it provided no statistics to demonstrate whether participation is increasing.
Vietnam’s Hanoi lottery is also popular. Participation in foreign lotteries remains prohibited in Thailand and those who advertise or promote such activities can face penalties of up to two years in prison and fines of up to THB2,000 (US$63).
