Air strikes were carried out in Poipet.
Cambodia.- Cambodian authorities have accused Thailand of carrying out an air strike on casinos in Poipet, a key border city. The Interior Ministry reported that at least four casinos had suffered damage from Thai air raids.
The Thai government alleges that Cambodia is sheltering dozens of scam centres disguised as casinos that hold Thai victims of human trafficking. It also claimed the casinos were being used as Cambodian weapons depots and firing positions. Thai army spokesman Richa Suksuwanon told reporters: “Every scam center and casino we attacked, we had clear intelligence that it was being used as a military base.”
Renewed hostilities between the Southeast Asian neighbours this month have resulted in 21 fatalities in Thailand and 17 in Cambodia and forced roughly 800,000 civilians from their homes.
At an international conference in Bangkok this week, Thailand’s Prime Minister Anutin Charnvirakul said in a press briefing: “If casinos in Cambodia were hiding fraud operations behind their doors, then we will regard it as a scamming center that we need to take care of.”
Cambodia has repeatedly maintained that it is cracking down on fraud hubs in its jurisdiction and that Thailand’s moves on the border casinos are illegal.
