In 2009, a spark lit up Taebaek, Korea, a spark that would launch a new chapter in the world of competitive gaming. It wasn’t just a tournament. It was a dream taking its first breath. The very first World Esports Championship brought together six pioneering nations: Korea, China, Romania, Netherlands, Denmark, and Germany, united not by borders, but by passion, ambition, and belief in a new future for esports, the IESF legacy.

With titles like FIFA Online 2, Warcraft, and A.V.A., the competition was fierce, but the spirit was even stronger. These weren’t just games. They were battles fought with skill, discipline, and heart—where athletes finally had a chance to stand on an international stage, not just as gamers, but as competitors, as champions, as representatives of their nations.

The First WEC was the birth of the International Esports Federation. A moment that laid the foundation for everything that followed: fair play, unity, athlete recognition, and the creation of something every esports athlete could strive for. A legacy. A home. A future.

The dream of international recognition and unity within the esports community took root, and it marked the beginning of a tradition of excellence, competition, and inclusivity, all of which continue to define IESF’s mission and its flagship event, the World Esports Championship.
