The Philippines.- The Philippine government has moved to reinforce restrictions on gambling in public areas under the “Safer Cities Initiative” announced by the Department of the Interior and Local Government (DILG). The project will initially roll out in Metro Manila before expanding nationwide, with a focus on curbing activities linked to crime in densely populated areas.
Among the measures is stricter enforcement of the existing ban on gambling in public spaces as well as street drinking and other issues. While the initiative does not introduce new legislation, it aims to reinforces the implementation of existing rules.
In Baguio City, authorities have reiterated the application of longstanding ordinances that prohibit the consumption of alcohol and any form of gambling in public places. These restrictions extend across parks, roads, transport terminals, and even stationary vehicles in public areas.
The initiative also includes curfews for minors, noise restrictions and expanded law enforcement deployment.
