Bruce Mathieson Jr will serve as executive chairman until a new chief executive is found.
Australia.- The Star Entertainment Group has announced the departure of chief executive officer and managing director Steve McCann, effective today (December 16). Bruce Mathieson Jr will take up additional responsibilities as executive chairman while a search is made for a new permanent CEO.
McCann, who took up the post in July 2024 during a period of heightened regulatory scrutiny and financial pressure, has agreed to remain available through to July 8, 2026.
In a statement released to the Australian Securities Exchange (ASX), Mathieson Jr praised McCann’s tenure, highlighting his role in stabilising the business during one of the most challenging periods in its history.
He said: “Steve joined at a time of crisis for The Star and has helped to deliver a critical financial reset for the business and successfully progressed our Remediation Plan, which have laid the foundations for
The Star’s long-term future success.”
McCann said: “The strategic investment by Bally’s Corporation and Investment Holdings Pty Ltd provides an opportunity for The Star to move in a new direction and pursue a pathway to recovery and future growth. Now is the right time for new leadership to be put in place with the experience and passion to build on that momentum and take The Star forward.”
Earlier this month, The Star Entertainment Group announced a series of board changes after the approval of Bally’s AU$300m (US$193m) investment. Bally’s chairman Soo Kim and president George Papanier have been named as directors, while The Star’s chairman, Anne Ward and non-executive director Deborah Page AM have resigned.
Bruce Mathieson Jr, whose family’s Investment Holdings is a key stakeholder, was elected as the new chairman., Peter Hodgson was appointed interim chair of the Audit Committee, and Eirene Garnsey was named an additional company secretary.
